Manbearpig sighting near Pittsburgh PA!

On the way from Williamsport to Pittsburgh (moved out of the Squirrel Hill apartment to Southside) Ben and I spotted Manbearpig about 40 minutes outside Pittsburgh. He surprised us (quick for a pig) and were unable to get a photo.

On the way back to Williamsport we were ready. Hands on phones near the spot we saw him previously, we snuck up on the half man half bear-pig demon and grabbed a video and some pics. Below is the video, but be warned, he is scary!

Yes, another HDR photo. I set my shot up on a tripod, pressed the button, then quickly got into place. I'm kind of happy with the placement, and the little tweak of the shirt, making it "calvin klein-esque" (which is what I was going for). The three RAW photos layered together give it a soft painted look, especially on my right arm. The larger you view it the more vivid the effect is - not quite as obvious at the thumbnail level.

I used Photomatix tone mapping for this image, made out of three AEB shots. The mapping gives it that "surreal" look - which is interesting. Now all I need is some decent subject matter. You can only take so many pictures in a little apartment.

HDR TEST CASE: Cathedral of Learning, University of Pittsburgh

This is my first test photo for High Dynamic Range imaging (HDR). Taken near sunsent across the street from the Cathedral, using my Canon Rebel XTi. Using Photoshop CS2, I combined three images with different shutter speeds(at -2, 0, +2), then adjusted to curves to tweak the levels. It may not be the prettiest picture ever, but it's a start.

The Rebel XTi has a feature that will take three images in a row with one button press, a helpful feature to reduce camera shake (and just generally a nice thing to have!) While HDR is by no means at the cutting edge of digital photography, it does open a new range of possibilities for the experimenting photographer (especially one looking to breathe new life into digital equipment).

In case your wondering, posting this image is a lame excuse for me to test the Flickr/Google/Blogger link combo. Google is looking more and more like a 'homebase' for internet users, a subject I'll be blogging about soon.
